What is a blizzard?
A blizzard is a severe snowstorm characterized by strong sustained winds and low visibility, lasting for a prolonged period- usually 3-4 hours. The winds are greater than 35 mph (56 kph), and visibility of less than ¼ mile (0.4 km). A blizzard can have a temperature of -12C or lower.

Areas targeted- Polar regions and high mountains, the great plains of the United States, and the prairies of Canada.
Season- mostly winter
Effects on humans- hypothermia, frostbite, and even a freezing death
Occur in
December and February.
Blizzards are formed when warm air and cold air are brought together, a front is formed and snow can form. Warm air can also rise to form clouds and blizzard snows as it flows up a mountainside.

The worst blizzard in history was in the winter of 1880-1881 and is widely considered the most severe winter ever known in many parts of the United States of America. The snow was so deep that even two-story homes experienced accumulations, as opposed to drifts, up to their second-floor windows.
